After a severe but concise lecture about respecting other people’s property, PC Wang diagnosed Troy with boredom and a bad attitude.

‘I could drag you through the youth courts but I don’t want to burden your poor mother,’ said PC Wang, swivelling gently back and forth in his office chair. ‘So, here’s what I have decided. You will start by cleaning up all your graffiti, including the face on the bonnet of Mrs Bennett’s car, and the butterfly on the side of the council building.’

‘It’s not a butterfly, it’s a ghost!’ Troy scowled.

‘And you need to find a way to occupy yourself,’ said PC Wang. He opened a brown folder on his desk and started writing in it. ‘I hereby sentence you to serve one term in the Collerden Sea Scouts. You will undertake the same activities as the other scouts, and obey the leader’s instructions. You will report back to me at the end of the term.’

Troy curled up his lip. ‘Scouts? That’s stupid! You can’t make me go.’

‘Indeed I can, and I will escort you there this Tuesday night at seven o’clock.’ PC Wang closed the brown folder. ‘Now, I am going home to bed, Troy. I suggest you do the same.’

Troy glared at PC Wang.

‘By the way, I hear the scouts might be learning to sail. That should be fun for you.’ PC Wang smiled.

Troy fixed PC Wang with one last frown then turned and stomped out of the police station, slamming the door as he left. Sailing! What a stupid sport. Scouts! What a bunch of Bambis. Well, if he had to go to scouts, he didn’t have to like it. A smirk formed on Troy’s face. Yes indeed, the scouts would regret the day Troy Grit had been forced to join. Within two weeks they’d be begging him to leave. He kicked at a rubbish bin on the main street and then sprinted home.
